The body of 14-year-old Samuel Bird has been discovered, leading to a murder charge in connection with his death, as confirmed by authorities on Thursday. Alanna Bird, the mother of Samuel, made the announcement on social media. The Edmonton Police Service disclosed in a news release that the remains were found in a rural area outside of Edmonton.
A 38-year-old man named Bryan Farrell was apprehended and charged with second-degree murder and tampering with evidence in relation to Bird’s demise. Additionally, Farrell faces 13 other charges, including aggravated assault, arson, unauthorized possession of a firearm, assaulting a peace officer, making threats, and fraud over $5,000.
Court documents reveal that the arson allegations against Farrell are linked to the west Edmonton property where Bird was last seen. A search warrant was executed by the police at the residence on September 18, and shortly thereafter, the house was engulfed in flames, deemed a suspicious fire.
Farrell is also accused of making threats to a woman regarding Samuel’s mother. The authorities have stated that Farrell is the sole individual charged, and they are not pursuing any other suspects in connection with Bird’s death.
Samuel Bird, a member of Paul First Nation, vanished on June 1 after departing his residence in west Edmonton to visit a friend. His disappearance prompted an extensive search effort involving family, volunteers, and search and rescue teams. Alanna Bird expressed gratitude on social media towards the police and all those who contributed to the search.
Tiera Williams, who participated in the search for Samuel Bird, including organizing a water search on the North Saskatchewan River, expressed her emotional reaction to the news of the discovery. She emphasized the importance of seeking justice for the young boy now that his remains have been located.
Surveillance footage captured Bird walking through the grounds of Holy Cross School around 8:30 p.m. on June 1. His last known location was at a friend’s house in the vicinity of 150th Street and 106th Avenue, where the police executed a search warrant in September.
Earlier this month, law enforcement declared Bird’s disappearance as criminal, stating their belief that he had been killed, and his body concealed outside the city. Detective Jared Buhler, the primary investigator from the EPS homicide section, expressed hope that the resolution would bring closure and justice to Samuel’s loved ones after an extensive investigation.
