A wildfire near Port Alberni, B.C., is experiencing rapid uncontrolled growth, expanding by over 100% in less than a day. The Mount Underwood wildfire, now covering nearly 14.5 square kilometers, is situated just over 10 kilometers south of the city on Vancouver Island, which has a population of about 19,000 residents.
Approximately 300 individuals were evacuated on Monday from a nearby campground and marina. The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD) has issued evacuation orders for the Mount Underwood area, including parts of Bamfield and Cherry Creek electoral areas, as the wildfire poses a threat to those in the affected zones.
Later on Tuesday, an evacuation alert was issued for an area north of the initial evacuation order. A local state of emergency was declared as a precaution. A reception center has been set up at the Alberni Athletic Hall for evacuees.
The ACRD stated that 50 properties, comprising commercial, industrial, and recreational sites, were impacted by the evacuation order. The majority of the properties were recreational, including long-term camping sites.
In a news conference, it was mentioned that five residential properties southeast of the fire in the Cowichan Lake area were also placed under evacuation orders. The affected residents were directed to seek assistance at the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena.
The wildfire has caused power outages for more than 500 B.C. Hydro customers in Bamfield. The outage is expected to last at least 72 hours, according to Huu-ay-aht First Nations Chief Coun. John Jack, who also serves as the ACRD chair.
The blaze, which was first discovered on Monday, grew rapidly in size within hours. By Tuesday afternoon, it had expanded to almost 14 square kilometers, exhibiting aggressive fire behavior. The road between Bamfield and Port Alberni is closed in both directions due to the wildfire, with alternative routes advised for travel.
The BC Wildfire Service reported that the fire was displaying extremely vigorous fire behavior, which is uncommon for Vancouver Island. Dry conditions, steep terrain, and strong winds have fueled the fire’s growth. Residents were urged to stay informed, be prepared, and follow official guidance during this challenging situation.
Structural protection measures have been implemented for private campgrounds, mills, and log-sorting facilities in the affected area. Crews are monitoring the weather closely as wind and rain are expected in the forecast. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
