President Donald Trump has unveiled the recipients of this year’s Kennedy Center honors, following a revamp of the Washington, D.C., performing arts venue board at the beginning of his second term. The honorees include actor Sylvester Stallone, Broadway star Michael Crawford, and musical artists Gloria Gaynor, George Strait, and KISS. Trump, who will host the ceremony in December, stated that he was heavily involved in the selection process, deviating from the usual bipartisan advisory committee’s historical role in choosing recipients.
During the announcement in Washington, Trump showcased a light-hearted demeanor, blending politics with self-praise for his administration’s achievements. This contrasted with his previous portrayals of the city as overrun by crime. Notably, Trump did not attend any Kennedy Center ceremonies during his first term.
The Kennedy Center, established in the late 1950s by President Dwight Eisenhower and named after President John F. Kennedy, has been honoring performers since the 1970s. Trump, in the early days of his second term, dismissed the center’s board and assumed the role of chair. This move, which replaced the bipartisan board composition, drew criticism from artists, some of whom canceled performances or resigned from advisory boards.
Trump’s involvement in the Kennedy Center’s operations raised concerns about potential politicization and changes in the selection process for honorees. The center traditionally honored individuals regardless of their political leanings. Notably, Trump criticized the center for what he perceived as a decline in programming.
Among the honorees is English actor Michael Crawford, known for his role in “The Phantom of the Opera.” The musical, in which Crawford starred, garnered critical acclaim and numerous awards during its Broadway run. Trump, a fan of musical theater, praised Crawford and lamented the show’s closure.
Another honoree, Gloria Gaynor, renowned for her disco anthem “I Will Survive,” received two Grammy Awards for her musical contributions. Additionally, the rock band KISS, known for their theatrical performances and merchandise innovations, announced their retirement from touring in 2023.
Sylvester Stallone, known for his iconic roles in “Rocky” and “Rambo,” also received the Kennedy Center honor. With a long-standing friendship with Trump, Stallone was appointed as a “special ambassador” to Hollywood earlier this year. Trump acknowledged Stallone’s impact on the film industry and praised his contributions.
Country music legend George Strait, recognized for his numerous chart-topping hits and accolades in the music industry, was also among the honorees. Despite retiring from extensive touring, Strait continues to perform select dates and remains a prominent figure in country music.
These honorees, selected by Trump, will be celebrated at the Kennedy Center honors ceremony in December, showcasing their significant contributions to American culture and entertainment.
