“Handshake Across the Border: Canadians and Americans Unite in Friendship”

-

Canadians and Americans gathered on Saturday at the International Peace Garden on the Manitoba-North Dakota border to demonstrate unity and friendship despite political differences. Jeoffrey Smith from Santa Rosa, Calif., expressed that the media portrayal does not reflect the true peaceful relationship between the two nations, emphasizing the mutual affection and respect between the people.

The Handshake Across the Border event brought together over 100 individuals from both sides to engage in a symbolic handshake at the Peace Garden, located near the Manitoba-North Dakota border crossing in Boissevain, Man. The initiative aimed to highlight the enduring connection and camaraderie between Canadians and Americans amid ongoing political tensions.

Established in 1932, the International Peace Garden stands as a tribute to peace and international cooperation. Smith, who participated in the event while returning to the U.S. from Winnipeg, viewed the handshake as a powerful symbol of the deep-rooted appreciation many Americans hold for Canadians, transcending trade disputes and political rhetoric.

Tim Chapman, CEO of the International Peace Garden, emphasized the importance of face-to-face interactions over virtual debates, underscoring the significance of fostering cross-border friendships. Participants like Alison Bjornseth from North Dakota expressed their commitment to maintaining strong bonds with Canadian friends, showing solidarity and support during challenging times.

The event, part of the garden’s Summer Floral Celebration, aimed to capture the essence of unity and collaboration between Canadians and Americans, showcasing the value of personal connections and mutual respect across borders.
