“Kaytranada’s Nostalgic Beats in ‘Ain’t No Damn Way!'”

Kaytranada’s latest solo album, titled Ain’t No Damn Way!, marks a nostalgic return to his musical origins. Prior to his notable collaborations with artists like Syd, H.E.R., Tinashe, and Kali Uchis, Kaytranada spent his youth delving into vinyl records and crafting beats in the basement of his family home in Montreal.

The essence of his new album lies in its rhythmic beats, predominantly instrumental with sporadic vocal samples expertly woven in. Emphasizing its purpose, Kaytranada took to Instagram to declare that the album is tailored for workouts, dancing, studying, and for those who appreciate raw beats.

While the absence of catchy sing-along choruses akin to his previous hits may be noted, Kaytranada’s production prowess and inventive use of samples shine through, ensuring a consistent groove throughout the record. In contrast to his previous album, Timeless, which featured a plethora of well-known collaborators, Ain’t No Damn Way! showcases more unexpected talents such as jazz drummer Karriem Riggins and Alex Sowinski from the Toronto jazz band BadBadNotGood.

In Ain’t No Damn Way!, Kaytranada skillfully samples tracks from iconic artists such as Barry White, TLC, and the Neptunes, seamlessly integrating them into his unique sound. Noteworthy examples include his use of Kelis’s Space Invader, Tangerine Dream’s Love on a Real Train, Steve Monite’s Things Fall Apart, Cappadonna’s Black Boy, and J. Dilla’s The Money, among others.

One standout track, “Do It! (Again!)” concludes the album with a reimagined version of TLC’s Let’s Do it Again, infusing the original R&B slow burn with Kaytranada’s signature drum kicks and energetic tempo for a dance-floor sensation.
