“Canadian Filmmaker Nicole Bazuin Unveils ‘Modern Whore’ Journey”

-

Nicole Bazuin’s personal essay series, “Cutaways,” features Canadian filmmakers sharing insights into their filmmaking journey. In this TIFF 2025 edition, director Nicole Bazuin delves into the making of her film “Modern Whore.”

Upon graduating from film school in 2011, I directed a music video for a local Toronto band with a 1960s Super 8 aesthetic and go-go dancers. One of the dancers, Andrea Werhun, brought a vibrant energy to the set, and our collaboration sparked a creative connection.

As our paths crossed, Andrea revealed her experience as an escort, igniting a desire to create art that mirrored her journey. Together, we embarked on creating “Modern Whore: A Memoir,” starting as a modest project and evolving into a published book in 2018 and an expanded edition in 2022.

Transitioning “Modern Whore” into a multimedia venture, we produced award-winning short films like “Modern Whore” and “Thriving: A Dissociated Reverie.” However, our vision expanded, leading us to pursue a feature film version.

Securing production funding after years of dedication, we assembled a talented team, including producer Lauren Grant and executive producer Sean Baker. With their support, we transformed “Modern Whore” into a hybrid documentary that blends narrative cinema with authentic storytelling.

From the book to the screen, our journey culminates in the world premiere of “Modern Whore” at the Toronto International Film Festival. This film, a testament to collaboration and creative ambition, aims to challenge stereotypes and offer a nuanced portrayal of sex work.

Andrea’s courageous portrayal in “Modern Whore” is a bold statement of empowerment and resilience. As we gear up for the festival premiere, we are grateful for the opportunity to share this impactful story with audiences worldwide.
