A Canadian soldier deployed in Latvia was tragically discovered deceased after being reported missing, as confirmed by the Canadian Armed Forces over the weekend. Warrant Officer George Hohl, a veteran with nearly two decades of service, was a vehicle technician with a helicopter squadron in Edmonton. He was part of the NATO multinational brigade in Latvia under Operation Reassurance.
The CAF is collaborating with Latvian authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding Hohl’s death, emphasizing that there is no heightened risk to other deployed personnel. General Jennie Carignan expressed deep condolences, highlighting Hohl’s long-standing dedication to his duties. The soldier’s passing has deeply impacted the military community, and heartfelt sympathies are extended to his loved ones and colleagues during this difficult time.
Operation Reassurance, Canada’s significant overseas commitment, currently involves approximately 2,000 CAF troops in Latvia since 2017. This mission aims to bolster Europe’s eastern defense and act as a deterrent against potential Russian aggression in the Baltic region. Prime Minister Mark Carney recently announced a further extension of Canada’s presence in Latvia until 2029 to uphold these strategic objectives.
