Aldi has announced a reduction in prices for over 900 products in its assortment in recent months. The supermarket shared that it has dedicated over £300 million to lowering prices since the beginning of 2025, covering various categories such as fresh produce, bakery items, dairy products, and household essentials.
Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, emphasized the significance of providing value to customers amid rising inflation. She highlighted the ongoing commitment to offering competitive prices, with the recent investment in price reductions reflecting Aldi’s dedication to ensuring customers receive exceptional value, particularly as they prepare for the upcoming holiday season.
Following a recent assessment by Which?, Aldi was once again recognized as the most affordable supermarket. The study revealed that a basket of 75 items cost an average of £127.92 at Aldi in August 2025, making it 38p cheaper than the same selection at Lidl with its loyalty program, Lidl Plus, at £128.30. The comparison included both branded and own-label items like Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.
In addition to price cuts, Aldi announced plans to open approximately one new store per week until the end of the year. Some confirmed locations include Sefton in Liverpool, Pacific Drive in Eastbourne, Brimington in Chesterfield, and Shoreditch in London.
The supermarket has identified priority locations across the UK for potential new stores, aiming for sites capable of accommodating a 20,000 sq ft store with ample parking and easy accessibility. Moreover, Aldi is seeking locations in Central London zones one and two for its Aldi Local store format, which typically requires a minimum of 5,000 sq ft of retail space and 3,000 sq ft of additional space.
Furthermore, Aldi confirmed its store closure on Boxing Day to allow staff time with loved ones. Stores will also be closed on New Year’s Day, reopening on January 2, 2026, with varied opening hours leading up to Christmas to accommodate customer needs.
