“UK Motorists Alerted to Sophisticated Parking Fine Scam”

-

UK motorists are being warned to be extra vigilant against a new scam targeting them through deceptive text messages. The fraudulent scheme preys on concerns about unpaid parking fines, creating a sense of urgency to prompt victims into making payments. The scam has gained attention for its sophisticated and convincing approach, resembling authentic notifications.

The scam typically initiates with a text message alleging an unpaid Parking Charge Notice (PCN) and warning of escalating consequences if the supposed fine is not settled promptly. The message reads, “Parking Charge Notice (PCN): The record shows that you have unpaid parking fines,” and sets a payment deadline, emphasizing potential additional penalties for delays.

The fraudulent text includes a clickable link, which authorities strongly advise recipients to avoid clicking. Several local councils have issued warnings following a surge in such scams. Trafford Council cautioned, “Please don’t click the link or make any payment,” while the Royal Borough of Greenwich stated, “If you receive a text claiming to be a PCN, it’s likely a scam.”

Those who interact with the link risk falling victim to the scam. Upon clicking, victims are directed to a website resembling the official UK Government’s GOV.UK platform, complete with matching fonts, designs, and colors. The site prompts users to enter their local council’s postcode and their vehicle’s registration details.

In a test conducted by Mirror Online, fictitious details were entered, leading to a demand for a £20 payment with a “Pay Now” option displayed. Subsequently, victims are coerced into providing their full name, address, and banking information. Surrendering such details grants scammers access to personal accounts, exposing victims to financial theft.

To safeguard against falling prey to such scams, individuals are advised to refrain from providing personal information, responding to suspicious messages, downloading attachments, or clicking on links from unverified sources. The GOV.UK website emphasizes the importance of vigilance and caution in handling unsolicited communications.

As scammers persist in deploying various tactics to extract personal data, motorists are urged to exercise caution and remain vigilant to protect themselves from potential fraud.
