“Freely Set to Challenge Sky with New Streaming Device”

-

Sky provides various methods for streaming TV, such as the all-encompassing Glass TV and compact Stream box that can be connected to any existing television. Offering access to a wide range of premium channels and personalized suggestions, Sky’s products stand out. Nevertheless, a new contender is emerging that might pose a significant challenge to Sky.

Freely, launched last year, currently allows UK households to stream live TV for free through newer TVs equipped with this service.

Once connected, these televisions simply link to the internet, providing access to live channels via broadband rather than relying on an antenna.

Previously, accessing this content required purchasing a new TV set. Fortunately, this is about to change.

Freely, a brand under the same ownership as Freeview, has announced the upcoming release of a new set-top box that will enable any UK household to access its platform on existing televisions. This move will directly compete with Sky’s Stream box.

Manufactured by Netgem, the device will be available for purchase later this year, offering complete access to over 40 live channels without the need for an antenna.

Freely’s set-top box will include features like a comprehensive TV guide, a Mini Guide displaying current and upcoming programs, viewing recommendations, live TV pause functionality, and a seven-day backward and forward option, allowing viewers to watch previously aired content.

Additionally, Freely promises regular automatic updates to enhance features, channels, and content continuously.

Unlike Sky, after purchasing the device, all content is free to watch, eliminating the need for subscription fees.

Commenting on the development, Jonathan Thompson, CEO of Everyone TV, stated: “Freely was designed to make free TV accessible to all. Expanding to plug-and-stream devices is a crucial and logical progression to ensure more households can enjoy the complete Freely experience without requiring a TV upgrade or paid subscription.”

Sylvain Thevenot, Managing Director of Netgem U.K., added: “Netgem is thrilled to introduce the initial Freely streaming device to the market in collaboration with Everyone TV. This innovation represents a game-changer for viewers seeking a simplified TV and entertainment experience delivered over Wi-Fi.

“The integration of Freely with Netgem’s entertainment service positions this streaming device as the optimal choice for all households, giving a new lease of life to all TVs at an affordable price.”
