Asda is gearing up to launch around 20 new convenience stores later this year. The initial Asda Express store is scheduled to debut in Castleford in early October, with subsequent openings in various locations following shortly after. These Asda Express outlets will stock up to 3,000 branded and own-label products, including essentials like milk and bread.
The upcoming stores will be strategically situated in urban areas, residential neighborhoods, and transportation hubs. This expansion initiative comes on the heels of Asda’s successful acquisition of 469 convenience store and fuel sites from Co-op and EG Group. Asda ventured into the Express store format in 2022.
David Lepley, Chief Supply Chain Officer at Asda, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming phase of the Express rollout, emphasizing their commitment to delivering exceptional value across the UK. Within just three years, Asda has evolved from having no convenience stores to establishing a significant presence in the sector, with nearly 500 stores expected by year-end.
The ongoing investment underscores Asda’s confidence in its convenience strategy and dedication to extending Asda’s competitive pricing to more local communities.
In related news, Asda recently revealed plans to revamp 180 of its in-store cafes as part of a £180 million investment. The cafe upgrades will feature digital ordering screens, table service options, alongside traditional manned tills.
Customers can look forward to a refreshed menu that includes new offerings like smashed avocado on toast, katsu chicken curry, salad bowls, wraps, nachos, loaded fries, and an expanded pizza selection. The updated menu will also introduce new beverage options such as flavored iced coffees and a variety of cakes.
The renovation, managed by partner Compass Group, is slated for completion by the end of October. Asda, which currently operates 205 cafes in total, has confirmed that its popular Kids Eat for £1 promotion will remain available.
