Joe Lycett has opened up about how he’s finding fatherhood for the first time since surprising fans with the birth of his son. The comedian welcomed his first child with a mystery partner in October last year, revealing the news to unsuspecting fans in an Instagram post.
Now, Joe has spoken about the “beautiful” experience of being a dad, six months on from welcoming his son into the world. Chatting with Lorraine Kelly on her ITV show, Joe said when asked about being a dad: “I’m amazed I’ve strung a sentence together because I’m so under slept. It’s so beautiful the whole thing.
“It’s very hard not to be clichéd when you talk about parenthood because everything everyone says about it is exactly right. It’s everything and maddening and beautiful. I’m having a lovely time with it, I’m in love with it.”
Referring to the photo he shared of his son back in October, Joe told viewers: “He’s not a potato. This is what everyone said on Instagram. ‘The neck – he’s not holding the neck right!’ The number of people who tell you how to parent through Daily Mail comments.”
Joe took fans by surprise towards the end of last year when he revealed that he had become a dad, writing on Instagram: “An appreciation post from me for the extraordinary @bham_womens hospital. My first encounter with them was years ago when they looked after a pal of mine through surgery, and then most recently when they masterfully welcomed a little boy into the world, who happens to be my son.
“The care and compassion his mum and he received was exceptional; from the antenatal classes, incredible midwives, consultants, doctors, nurses and the ongoing care in the community. We also loved their baked potatoes. Birmingham is so lucky to have them and I will be forever grateful for everything they’ve done.
“I am LOVING being a dad but sadly I think this now means I can’t get out of going on Rob and Josh’s f**king podcast. We will not be taking any press requests about this as we have already sold the rights to the first family picture to Autotrader.”
Joe had previously opened up about his partner ‘Denise’ on Bimini Bon Boulash’s podcast The Pieces, saying: “So I’ve got Winston the cat, and my partner Denise. And, um, she’s not called Denise, but I don’t talk about her, because she has a job that she can’t be in the public eye. I call her Denise because she hates the name Denise, so, uh, I live with Denise.”
Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV1 and ITVX.
