Netflix has announced that hit series Heartstopper is coming to an end after three series on the streamer. The romantic drama, which is based on Alice Oseman’s graphic novels of the same name, tells the story of how gay student Charlie falls in love with new classmate Nick.
The series show its stars Kit Connor and Joe Locke to fame and while it’s been a huge hit with fans, Netflix has announced that it will be concluded with a feature film.
“After three seasons of the fan-favourite series, the much-anticipated final instalment will conclude the story of Nick, Charlie and their friends, with the narrative based around the yet unreleased volume six of Alice Oseman’s graphic novels,” Netflix revealed.
The film is set to begin filming in summer 2025, with actors Kit and Joe signing on as executive producers.
Creator and writer Alice Oseman said in a statement that she is “completely overjoyed” that she gets to tell the end of the Heartstopper story.
“I’m so grateful to everyone who has worked hard to make this possible and to the incredible fans of Heartstopper for your patience and passion. I cannot wait to bring this story to a magical conclusion.”
A synopsis for the upcoming film reveals that fans will see Nick and Charlie find the idea of a long-distance relationship daunting while Nick prepares to leave for university.
“Doubts take hold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet,” Netflix teases. “Meanwhile, their friends are also navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet challenges of growing up and moving on. Can first loves really last forever?”
Fans were left devastated by the confirmation that Heartstopper would come to an end, with one writing on X: “Screaming, crying, throwing up.”
Another said: “I know it’s disappointing that we’re not getting a whole new season, but I honestly think it was this or nothing at all. With the actors being so busy now, this was our best shot at an ending, and I’m sure it will do Nick and Charlie justice.”
In fact, a number of fans were just glad that Heartstopper was getting a final chapter in some form after many feared that it would not return at all.
“I really thought it was over for us, I’m so unbelievably happy,” one fan tweeted.
“I was hoping for a new season but I’ll take it! We’ll get some more #Heartstopper yeees,” another said.
