Aldi has revealed intentions to launch 80 new stores in the next two years, marking a significant £1.6 billion investment. Within the upcoming 13 weeks, 21 new outlets will open, including locations in Shoreditch, Durham, and Kirkintilloch. The budget supermarket has identified 20 priority areas for new store openings, such as Bromley, Ealing, South Shields, and Witney.

With a current count of 1,060 stores in the UK, Aldi aims to expand to 1,500 stores, generating numerous job opportunities and partnerships with British suppliers. In its latest financial report for the 12 months up to December 2024, Aldi reported a sales increase to £18.1 billion. Operating profit decreased to £435.5 million, attributed partly to customer price reductions, infrastructure investments, and employee wage increases.

Aldi has recently slashed prices on over 900 products, with a total investment of over £300 million in price reductions since the beginning of 2025, spanning categories like fruits, vegetables, bread, dairy, and household essentials. The supermarket also raised the minimum wage for store assistants twice this year, with hourly rates set at £13.02 nationally and £14.35 within the M25.

Giles Hurley, Aldi’s Chief Executive Officer for the UK and Ireland, emphasized the commitment to providing high-quality products at competitive prices. Aldi’s mission to offer everyday low prices without gimmicks has driven its expansion since opening its first UK store over 35 years ago. The supermarket’s investment of £1.6 billion over the next two years aims to bring Aldi’s affordability to more customers.

Which? recently recognized Aldi as the most economical supermarket, with a 75-item basket averaging at £127.92 in August 2025. This price was 38p lower than Lidl, which totaled £128.30 with its loyalty scheme Lidl Plus. The shopping list comprised both branded and own-brand items like Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.
