“Facebook Live Tragedy: Man Kills Infant Daughter, Commits Suicide”

-

In a disturbing incident, a man was captured on video killing his infant daughter live on Facebook before taking his own life. Thai authorities disclosed that 21-year-old Wuttisan Wongtalay hung his 11-month-old daughter Natalie and then committed suicide at an abandoned hotel in Phuket following a domestic dispute with his wife in 2017.

The shocking video remained online on Facebook for an entire day before being removed by the platform. Facebook extended sympathies to the family for the “appalling” occurrence. Subsequently, local media aired heart-wrenching scenes of the child’s mother, 21-year-old Chiranut Trairat, grieving while holding her baby girl.

Chiranut Trairat expressed understanding towards those who shared the video out of outrage and sadness, mentioning her close relationship with the perpetrator, who had a history of abusive behavior and had previously served a prison sentence. She was seen in footage beside her daughter’s coffin at a temple, tearfully addressing her child.

This tragic event was the first known murder broadcast on Facebook in Thailand, eliciting strong reactions from viewers. The video was also briefly available on YouTube before being removed. Facebook pledged to review its content policies following a similar incident in the US in 2017.

Facebook’s spokesperson reiterated condolences for the family impacted by the tragedy, emphasizing the platform’s zero-tolerance for such content. In previous incidents in Thailand, Facebook Live was used by local media to cover a distressing event that ended in a suicide broadcast.
