“Starmer Vows Unwavering Support for Anti-Cover-Up Bill”

-

Keir Starmer reassured Hillsborough families today that he remains committed to upholding a significant new bill aimed at preventing future state cover-ups. The Prime Minister met with campaigners, including Margaret Aspinall, whose son James was among the 97 victims of the tragic incident, outside Downing Street. During a private meeting in the Downing Street White Room, Starmer affirmed that the proposed bill, which introduces criminal sanctions for public officials found lying, will not be weakened during its passage through Parliament.

Following the meeting, Starmer emphasized the importance of the legislation, stating that considerable effort had been invested in its development. He reiterated his promise to Aspinall, whom he has known for a long time, that the bill would not be diluted and emphasized the urgency of enacting it promptly.

The families of the 97 Liverpool fans who lost their lives in the Hillsborough stadium disaster in 1989 have fought tirelessly for justice over the years. Starmer had initially aimed to publish the bill by the 36th anniversary of the tragedy in April, underscoring his determination to overcome obstacles in achieving this goal.

Margaret Aspinall expressed hope that the new law would prevent others from enduring similar suffering. She highlighted the significance of the legislation not only for the victims but also for the broader population.

Acknowledging the relentless efforts of the Hillsborough campaigners, the Prime Minister commended their courage and emphasized the lasting impact of their advocacy. Concerns raised by some campaigners regarding potential dilution of the bill’s provisions were addressed by the government’s confirmation of including a legal duty of candour, ensuring public officials act with honesty and integrity, with the possibility of facing legal consequences for any breaches.

Sue Roberts, whose brother was a victim of the tragedy, hailed the day as monumental, expressing gratitude for the resolution of legal concerns and affirming the government’s commitment to seeing the bill through.

In a positive development, the government has taken steps to incorporate necessary safeguards into the legislation, signaling progress in ensuring accountability and transparency within the public sector.
