The individual from a vocational school suspected of the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at a university in Utah was set to appear in court on Tuesday to face official charges, appearing via video link from jail for the first time since the incident.
Tyler Robinson, aged 22, stands accused of firing a single shot from a sniper’s position on a rooftop that struck Kirk’s neck last week at Utah Valley University in Orem, situated approximately 65 kilometers south of Salt Lake City.
The killing prompted widespread condemnation of political violence from various perspectives, leading to a flurry of finger-pointing and fears that Kirk’s death could incite further violence.
Authorities have not disclosed a potential motive behind the attack, although Kirk’s spouse and other allies swiftly portrayed him as a martyr for their beliefs. Kirk, the co-founder of Turning Point USA, a conservative student organization, and a prominent supporter of former President Donald Trump, was addressing a crowd of 3,000 individuals when he was shot. He succumbed to his injuries later at a medical facility. He was 31 years old.
The suspect, a third-year student in an electrical apprenticeship program at a state technical college, initially fled amidst the chaos following the shooting.

He was apprehended on Thursday night at his parents’ residence, approximately 420 kilometers southwest of the crime scene, after family members and an acquaintance notified authorities that Robinson had confessed to the crime, as per Utah Governor Spencer Cox.
Robinson was taken into custody at Utah County Jail on suspicion of aggravated murder, a serious weapons violation, and obstruction of justice, according to a statement submitted by investigators.
Cox mentioned that the state might pursue the death penalty if Robinson is found guilty, but prosecutors would take into account the preferences of Kirk’s family before reaching a decision. The incident has unsettled Americans who have witnessed a rise in political violence in recent times, including two assassination attempts on Trump last year and the murder of a Democratic legislator in Minnesota this summer, among other notable incidents.
Robinson was slated to appear via video link from jail on Tuesday afternoon at Utah County Justice Court in Provo.
The district attorney of Utah County planned to conduct a press briefing to detail the charges a few hours prior to the hearing. Newly submitted court documents accompanying the charges may offer further insight into the investigation.
