“2025 CBC Kids Reads: Canadian Picture Books Shortlist Revealed”

The 2025 CBC Kids Reads shortlist has been unveiled, featuring five Canadian picture books. CBC Kids, in collaboration with celebrity readers Jay Baruchel, Anna Lambe, Andrew Phung, Kayla Grey, and Josh Dela Cruz, will champion these books in the third edition of CBC Kids Reads, a literary event for young readers. The shortlist represents the diverse experiences of children across Canada, with the winner set to be announced in a special event on Oct. 4 at 10:20 a.m. ET on CBC TV, CBC Gem, and CBC Kids YouTube.

The live-to-tape special, recorded at the Civic Centre Resource Library in Vaughan, Ont., will allow kids and families to vote for their favorite book. The event will showcase all five picture books on the shortlist, with each book’s celebrity champion providing readings. The program will also air as a CBC radio broadcast on Oct. 13.

The contenders for the 2025 CBC Kids Reads and their champions include “Mad at Dad” by Janie Hao, championed by Andrew Phung with Gary the Unicorn; “Cone Dog” by Sarah Howden, championed by Jay Baruchel with Stuffy the Dog; “I am a Rock” by Ashley Qilavaq-Savard, championed by Anna Lambe with Mosey Monster; “The Hockey Skates” by Karl Subban, championed by Kayla Grey with Cottonball the Cat; and “The Little Green Envelope” by Gillian Sze, championed by Josh Dela Cruz with Mr. Orlando the Moose.

Each book tells a unique story aimed at engaging young readers and exploring important themes. The celebrity champions are excited to share these captivating tales with the audience and promote the joy of reading among children.
