Vanessa Butler, a resident of Western Bay, experienced the devastating loss of her home in a massive wildfire that swept through Conception Bay North in August. Despite the heartbreaking situation, she was determined to return to her property and search for any salvageable items amid the wreckage.

Having lived in Western Bay for about 15 years, Butler sought solace and tranquility away from urban life. Her mobile home by a pond symbolized a sense of security and nostalgia reminiscent of her childhood visits to her grandparents’ place.

The destructive fire that started on August 3 in Kingston spread to Conception Bay, compelling Butler to evacuate. The aftermath left her anxiously waiting for the chance to return home, only to find her residence reduced to twisted metal and ash.

Team Rubicon, a group led by veterans and volunteers specializing in disaster relief, arrived in Conception Bay North to assist homeowners in salvaging precious belongings from the ruins. They tirelessly searched through the debris, aiming to provide some solace by recovering sentimental items.

On her birthday, Butler’s wish to find her grandfather’s mug, a cherished possession, seemed bleak amid the extensive destruction. However, against all odds, the team uncovered the cracked but intact mug buried near her kitchen area.

Emotions ran high as Butler held the damaged mug, a poignant symbol of resilience and hope amidst the devastation. Despite the challenges, the discovery brought a glimmer of light and comfort to her in the midst of the tragedy.

Reflecting on her birthday spent camping on her property with the recovered mug, Butler’s experience served as a testament to strength and the power of small miracles in times of adversity.
