A new task force has been established in British Columbia to address the increasing incidents of extortion threats and shootings targeting the South Asian community. The task force, led by the B.C. RCMP, will comprise 40 members from various law enforcement agencies.
To support extortion investigations, $300,000 from the federal gun and gang action fund will be allocated to local police. Additionally, funds will be directed to Crime Stoppers for a public awareness campaign on extortion.
Nina Krieger, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, emphasized the importance of halting these crimes, stating that no individual, family, or business in the province should endure such threats.
The Surrey Police Service reported investigating 45 extortion threats and 27 related shootings in the city this year. While arrests have been made in some cases, B.C. RCMP Assistant Commissioner John Brewer did not disclose specific numbers.
Brewer highlighted that charge recommendations have been submitted for some ongoing investigations, awaiting assessment by Crown counsel. The collaborative effort aims to safeguard communities and apprehend those responsible for violence and intimidation.
Mayor Brenda Locke of Surrey recently announced a $250,000 fund to reward individuals providing information leading to successful extortion convictions. Meanwhile, Gurdeep Shergill from Delta, B.C., faces charges of extortion and two counts of shooting with intent in Brampton, Ontario.
Extortion perpetrators may range from family members to individuals associated with international gangs, according to Brewer. The RCMP has linked the India-based Lawrence Bishnoi gang to extortion threats in the South Asian community, prompting calls for its classification as a terrorist group.
Surrey Police Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton expressed concern about the reluctance of individuals with information to come forward, emphasizing the need to create a supportive environment for victims and witnesses. Krieger highlighted the availability of VictimLinkBC helpline and crime victim assistance programs for extortion victims.
Overall, the task force’s objective is to combat extortion crimes effectively and ensure the safety of communities impacted by these threats.
