ABC has decided to suspend Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show following backlash over remarks made by the host regarding the tragic shooting of Charlie Kirk. The network took this action after some ABC-affiliated stations refused to broadcast the show due to objections over Kimmel’s comments during recent episodes.
During the shows on Monday and Tuesday, Kimmel stated that “many in MAGA land are working very hard to capitalize on the murder of Charlie Kirk.” Kirk was fatally shot during an event at a Utah University campus on September 10, with Tyler Robinson, 22, facing charges of aggravated murder in connection to the incident.
Kimmel criticized the president’s response to Kirk’s death, saying it was not reflective of adult behavior in grieving the loss of a friend. He also made comparisons regarding the handling of the case by FBI director Kash Patel. Additionally, Kimmel mocked vice president JD Vance’s decision to guest host Kirk’s podcast.
In his Tuesday night monologue, Kimmel reiterated his previous comments about some individuals attempting to exploit Kirk’s murder for political gain. He specifically called out US Vice President JD Vance for attributing blame to the left without substantiated evidence.
The controversy surrounding Kimmel’s remarks extended to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chairman Brendan Carr, who labeled the conduct as reprehensible and hinted at potential consequences for ABC. Former President Trump commended ABC’s decision to suspend Kimmel, criticizing the host’s talent and ratings in comparison to Stephen Colbert.
Various Hollywood figures, including actor Ben Stiller and actress Sophia Bush, expressed support for Kimmel, questioning the state of free speech in America. CBS previously announced financial reasons for halting The Late Show With Stephen Colbert in May. Nexstar Communications Group and Sinclair, two major ABC affiliates, voiced disapproval of Kimmel’s comments and indicated their actions of pulling the show and demanding a direct apology to Kirk’s family.
The situation has garnered attention and sparked discussions about professionalism and accountability in media content.
