“Sharp Increase in Full-Time Carers Reflects Growing Caregiving Trend”

-

A recent report highlights a significant increase in the number of full-time carers for disabled loved ones, indicating a growing trend of caregiving in our society. The rise in individuals providing over 35 hours of unpaid care per week has surged by 70%, with a particular emphasis on middle-aged women stepping in to care for family members.

Research conducted by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation shows that the count of full-time unpaid carers in England has escalated from 1.1 million in 2003/04 to 1.9 million in 2023/24. Conversely, there has been a 15% increase in applications for formal social care support for the elderly, but only a 2.5% rise in those actually receiving it.

Dr. Parth Patel, the associate director at the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), expressed concerns, stating that the growing need for care is not being adequately met due to a shortage of caregivers. The IPPR is advocating for better state funding to ensure affordability and accessibility of care for everyone, along with improved support for unpaid carers through workplace rights and income protection.

The Mirror has initiated the Fair Care for All campaign to call for the proper staffing and funding of social care. The Government’s promise to establish a new “National Care Service” has been delayed pending a national review, leaving the issue of social care funding unresolved.

Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, voiced his support for the report, emphasizing the crucial role of unpaid carers in providing care within families. He stressed the need for reform to create a care system that is universal, affordable, reliable, and fair.

The IPPR’s recommendations align with Labour policy, aiming to create a care system that meets the needs of both carers and those requiring care. The ongoing discussion underscores the urgency for comprehensive reform to build a sustainable care system for the future.
