Disney World is in mourning following the loss of Gino the gorilla, a cherished member of the park since its inception. The theme park announced the passing of the 44-year-old western lowland gorilla, the oldest at Animal Kingdom, on Wednesday.

In a heartfelt message shared on Facebook by Disney’s Animals, Science, and Environment, they expressed deep sadness over Gino’s death. Gino had been a beloved presence at Disney’s Animal Kingdom for nearly three decades, known for his playful nature, gentle humor, and role as a dedicated father and troop leader.

Gino’s legacy includes 14 offspring, significant contributions to gorilla care and conservation worldwide, and lasting memories for staff and visitors alike. Despite not reaching his 45th birthday in December, Gino’s impact will endure through his species’ future and in the hearts of those who knew and adored him.

Animal Kingdom, which opened in Orlando, Florida, on April 22, 1998, saw Gino as a prominent attraction for visiting families, often displaying his characteristic behavior of chest-beating. He held the distinction of being the longest-standing resident at the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail in the Africa Pavilion of Disney World’s Animal Kingdom.

Following the news of Gino’s passing, tributes poured in for the revered gorilla, with many sharing fond recollections of their interactions with him. Fans expressed their condolences and admiration for the care he received from staff over the years, highlighting his impact on their visits to the park.

Gino’s remarkable longevity, surpassing the typical lifespan of gorillas in the wild, drew admiration from well-wishers who recognized the exceptional care he received at Disney World. His captivating presence and cherished memories will forever hold a special place in the hearts of those who encountered him at Animal Kingdom.
