A man accused of sexually assaulting a dead man on a New York City subway before fleeing the station has been arrested after handing himself to police. Felix Rojas, 44, was charged with rape almost three weeks after the incident, which took place on an R train at Whitehall Street subway station just after midnight on Wednesday, April 9, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD).

The victim was named as 37-year-old family man Jorge Gonzalez – who tragically died on the train before being allegedly targeted by Rojas. The alleged necrophiliac, from Brooklyn, turned himself in to police with his son on Sunday, sources said. The force said Gonzalez boarded the subway at roughly 8pm on April 8 before Rojas boarded the train around three hours later.

The accused then allegedly performed the depraved act on Gonzalez, who died under mysertious circumstances, shortly before midnight – and then fled the train around 12:08am, according to security footage obtained by officers.

The NYPD released and circulated an image of the suspect on the train before an arrest was made. It was not immediately clear what led to Gonzalez’s death, but his estranged wife said he had suffered with alcoholism and cirrhosis.

Earlier this month, the NYPD issued a photo of Rojas, urging the public to come forward if they had any information. The force said they wanted to speak to Rojas in connection with the incident, but did not name him.

During their manhunt, police described Rojas as being around 5ft9 inches tall and weighing roughly 195lbs with black hair and brown eyes. According to the New York Post, his last known address was Manor Avenue in the Soundview section of the Bronx.

The incident came just two days after the NYPD were alerted to a terrifying attack inside a New York subway station on Monday, where a man allegedly attempted to rape a woman.

The alleged victim, 30, was set upon at Rutgers Street and East Broadway station on the Lower East side as she waited for a northbound F train at around 2.30am.

Police said the man wrapped his arm around the woman, forced her trousers down and tried to rape her, the NYPD said. The attacker is believed to be aged between 25 and 35 years old and around 5ft4 inches tall with light skin, a thin build and black hair.

He was last seen wearing a white hoodie, dark blue jeans and white trainers.
