The documentary “Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery” was scheduled to debut on Disney+ on September 21. However, Sarah McLachlan decided to cancel performances in solidarity with free speech. McLachlan expressed concerns about the current situation, highlighting the challenges faced in preserving women’s rights, trans and queer rights, and free speech.
This decision came shortly after ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel and his show “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” due to comments made about MAGA supporters following Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Kirk, known for opposing transgender rights and fundraising against transgender medical care, was a vocal critic of the 2SLGBTQ+ community.
Following Kimmel’s suspension, a boycott against Disney gained traction, leading to a surge in cancellations on the Disney+ platform and a decline in Disney’s stock value. Notably, ABC News Studios, a Disney-owned entity, is responsible for distributing the “Lilith Fair” documentary in the U.S.
McLachlan emphasized the importance of pushing forward as an artist and woman to seek a better way forward. She announced the cancellation of surprise performances at the premiere event, opting instead to stand in solidarity for free speech.
While the performers were not officially disclosed, sources indicated that McLachlan, Jewel, and possibly Olivia Rodrigo, featured in the documentary, were expected to perform. “Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and is now accessible for streaming on CBC Gem.
