Longueuil police fatally shot a 15-year-old boy named Nooran Rezay on Sunday. He was pronounced dead at the hospital after being hit by police gunfire during an operation on Montreal’s South Shore. The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI), Quebec’s police oversight agency, is conducting an investigation.
The BEI reported that Longueuil police received a 911 call at approximately 2:48 p.m. alerting them to a group of armed individuals in a public area. Within ten minutes, officers arrived at the scene near Joseph-Daigneault and Monaco streets.
Upon arrival, the officers engaged with the group, resulting in one person being shot by the police, as stated in the BEI’s preliminary information release. First aid was administered by officers at the scene until ambulances arrived.
CETAM, the ambulance co-operative serving Montreal’s South Shore, dispatched two ambulances and an advanced care team to the location. Rezay was then transported to the hospital by paramedics after sustaining at least one gunshot wound.
Rezay, a student at André-Laurendeau High School in Longueuil, close to the shooting site, was offered psychosocial support for students and staff affected by his death. An eyewitness, Alexandre Girard, described hearing two loud sounds and witnessing police performing CPR on a person on the ground, causing distress among onlookers.
The BEI is actively investigating the incident, deploying five investigators to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, with assistance from the Montreal police.
