“UK and France to Recognize Palestinian Statehood for Peace”

Yvette Cooper addressed the United Nations, emphasizing that recognizing Palestinian statehood was crucial for maintaining the path to peace. Speaking at the UN General Assembly, the foreign secretary expressed concern over the imminent threat to the two-state solution, warning that it could be lost amid escalating tensions.

Cooper highlighted the destructive intentions of extremists on all sides but remained steadfast in refusing to let hope diminish. She acknowledged the heart-wrenching suffering of families with loved ones held captive by Hamas after the brutal attacks on October 7th.

The foreign secretary criticized Benjamin Netanyahu’s government for exacerbating the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza by escalating conflict and obstructing aid distribution. She pointed out the tragic contrast of children starving while food supplies sit idly at the border and raised concerns about the expansion of settlements threatening the viability of a Palestinian state.

Reflecting on history, Cooper noted that Britain, 75 years ago, proudly recognized Israel but failed to fulfill the promise of upholding Palestinian rights. She announced a shift in policy, with the UK now joining over 150 member states in acknowledging the state of Palestine to safeguard the path to peace.

At the same meeting, world leaders and diplomats applauded President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement that France would also recognize Palestinian statehood. Macron stressed the urgency of ending hostilities, releasing hostages, and pursuing peace in the region.

He emphasized the importance of preserving the prospect of a two-state solution, with Israel and Palestine coexisting peacefully. Macron declared France’s recognition of Palestine and pledged to establish a French embassy once all Israeli hostages held by Hamas are freed. Additionally, he stated that European support for Israel would be contingent on measures taken to end the conflict and engage in peace negotiations.

By pursuing this path, Macron envisioned a sovereign, independent, and demilitarized Palestinian state, fostering mutual recognition between Israel and Palestine.
