The provincial police oversight agency is set to provide an update on Tuesday morning regarding the investigation into a fatal police encounter in Longueuil, Quebec, where a 15-year-old boy was shot and killed. The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) has organized a press conference with its director, Brigitte Bishop, at 8:30 a.m. at the Longueuil office on Montreal’s South Shore.
This update marks a departure from the agency’s usual practice of sharing minimal information at the start of an investigation and maintaining secrecy until the conclusion of their work. According to initial details released on Monday, the shooting took place around 2:48 p.m. on Sunday near Joseph-Daigneault and Monaco streets after a 911 call reported a group of armed individuals in a public area. Police arrived approximately 10 minutes later, resulting in a fatal shooting during the encounter.
Johnny Inthisone, a witness to the incident, stated that the shooting transpired swiftly, with the police barely engaging with the 15-year-old before firing two shots. Family and friends of the teenager, speaking to the media on Monday, portrayed him as a gentle and non-violent individual who was carrying only books in his school bag at the time of the shooting.
The victim, known as Nooran, was a student at André-Laurendeau High School, located close to the incident site. His father, Sharif Rezay, emphasized the family’s call for justice during discussions with reporters. The BEI is responsible for investigating cases involving injuries or fatalities during police interventions and has deployed five investigators to handle this particular incident, with support from the Montreal police.
