“Massive Sinkhole Swallows Cars in Bangkok Chaos”

-

A massive sinkhole, measuring 50 meters deep, caused chaos in Bangkok as it suddenly opened up on the streets, swallowing cars and disrupting normal life for residents. The collapse of a section of road in the Thai capital left a gaping hole that led to evacuations in the vicinity. Authorities attributed the incident to the nearby construction of an underground train station.

Fortunately, no casualties were reported, but the collapse damaged three vehicles and created significant traffic disturbances for several hours. Videos captured the dramatic scene as the road slowly sank, pulling down electricity poles and damaging water pipes in its path.

The situation remains critical as officials warned that heavy rain from the ongoing monsoon season in Thailand could exacerbate the damage. The sinkhole, measuring 164 feet wide, halted near a police station, revealing its underground structure. A nearby hospital announced a temporary closure of outpatient services for two days.

Despite the challenges, efforts are underway to address the damage and stabilize the area. Evacuations were ordered for the police station and surrounding buildings as a precautionary measure. Footage showed cars attempting to retreat as the sinkhole expanded, leading to the complete severance of the four-lane road.

Bangkok, which ranked as the world’s most visited city in 2024, continues to attract tourists, with a record 32.4 million visitors exploring the vibrant destination. City officials are closely monitoring the situation, with ongoing efforts to fill the gap and ensure safety. Meanwhile, Bangkok is still recovering from the aftermath of a devastating 8.2 magnitude earthquake that caused widespread destruction across Thailand, claiming numerous lives and reducing high-rise buildings to rubble.
