The Mayor highlighted his efforts in reacquiring control over Manchester’s bus network, reversing privatization trends from the 1980s. He also proposed bringing essential services such as housing, energy, water, and rail back under public ownership.
Burnham’s remarks are likely to be perceived as interference by Downing Street as Starmer seeks to refocus the political narrative at the Labour conference following recent setbacks. The resignations within the government have disrupted the planned agenda, including the contest for the deputy leadership position following Angela Rayner’s resignation.
Amid these challenges, Starmer had to dismiss his Ambassador to Washington, Peter Mandelson, due to connections with Jeffrey Epstein, a disgraced billionaire. Additionally, a senior aide in No10, Paul Ovenden, resigned over inappropriate messages targeting veteran MP Diane Abbott.
