“Apple Orchard Implements Regulations to Deter Thefts”

-

An apple orchard in West Montrose, Ont., is facing challenges as visitors are stealing fruits from the farm. Tim Shuh, the owner of Shuh Orchards near Kitchener, has decided to implement new regulations for this apple-picking season. These rules prohibit visitors from bringing strollers, backpacks, and wagons to the farm due to the increasing incidents of theft.

Shuh reluctantly introduced these rules after observing a surge in theft during two consecutive busy weekends, where it became challenging to monitor the movements of visitors amidst the large crowds. He mentioned instances where visitors were seen concealing apples and attempting to leave without paying. Some were caught trying to smuggle apples in their vehicles or hiding them in strollers.

In the past two weeks, Shuh Orchards welcomed 7,500 customers, with 3,500 in the first week and 4,000 in the following week. Shuh estimated that around 500 pounds of apples were stolen during this period, potentially resulting in a revenue loss of up to $2,000. The continuous theft incidents have left Shuh contemplating whether to allow visitors to pick apples in the future.

Similarly, other farms in the region, like Good Family Farm Pumpkins, have also experienced theft issues. Byron Good, the co-owner, acknowledged the challenges of dealing with theft but expressed reluctance to enforce strict rules like those at Shuh Orchards, as it could impact the customer experience.

Kevin Vallier, CEO of Agritourism Ontario, highlighted that theft problems in pick-your-own farms extend beyond Waterloo region, affecting farmers’ inventory and increasing operational costs. Some farmers have considered drastic measures, including shutting down U-pick operations due to significant financial losses.

While some farmers are hesitant to implement stringent rules that may affect the customer experience, the need to address theft concerns is paramount. Shuh emphasized the importance of fostering a connection between consumers and producers through agritourism while ensuring the protection of the farm and its visitors from theft incidents.
