Police have provided a significant update regarding a British sailor who went missing over a month ago. Investigators believe that James Nunan, 34, may have had an accident off Gran Canaria, Spain, while sailing to a neighboring island after a night out. It is suspected that Nunan fell from the mast of his yacht and ended up in the sea.
Initial reports indicate that Nunan, from Colchester, was last seen at a kebab shop in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, after socializing at an Irish pub. His family, who traveled to the island, were informed of a new sighting on August 19 when Nunan reported his passport missing at a police station.
The yacht that Nunan, a bricklayer, intended to sail to Brazil during his solo voyage was found approximately 50 miles off Gran Canaria. His dog, Thumbelina, was discovered alone on the vessel. Police are focusing on the theory that Nunan may have had an accident at sea, possibly falling from the mast due to missing safety equipment.
Authorities suspect that Nunan could have encountered difficulties while climbing the mast in adverse weather conditions. Investigations are ongoing, including tracking his electronic devices and conducting checks on his hospital records and bank accounts. The case has been assigned to a local court in Las Palmas for further legal proceedings.
Nunan was last seen in Las Palmas before visiting an Irish pub. His belongings, including his rucksack, were reportedly stolen, and his sister mentioned that he reported his passport as lost or stolen at a police station. The family continues to search for Nunan, expressing emotional exhaustion over the ordeal.
