“Denmark Bans Civilian Drones Amid Security Concerns”

-

Denmark has issued a prohibition on civilian drone flights following sightings of drones at various military installations overnight. This decision comes after drone activities led to the temporary closure of several Danish airports last week. The Danish military responded to the overnight drone sightings at bases with various measures but did not disclose further details.

The recent drone incidents, which forced the closure of Danish airports, including Copenhagen Airport for nearly four hours, have been described by Denmark as part of a “hybrid attack.” While not explicitly naming the responsible party, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen hinted at Russia being a potential threat to European security. Russia has denied any involvement in the drone activities.

The ban on civilian drones in Danish airspace will be effective from Monday to Friday of the upcoming week, coinciding with Denmark hosting European leaders as part of its EU presidency. Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen emphasized the importance of ensuring optimal security conditions during the EU summit.

Denmark will also host EU leaders and the European Political Community summit, formed to unite the EU with other European countries post-Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. To bolster airspace surveillance during these events, a German air defence frigate has arrived in Copenhagen. Additionally, following a NATO meeting in Riga, Colonel Martin O’Donnell announced increased vigilance and communication with Danish authorities in response to the drone incidents.
