After enduring 13 months of sorrow, the family of Jay Slater received closure during the summer regarding his tragic disappearance in Tenerife. Jay vanished after attending a party at the NRG rave in Playa de las América and later heading to an Airbnb in Masca. He had consumed a mix of drugs and alcohol before embarking on a challenging journey back to his accommodation, expressing reluctance to return to his previous location.
At the inquest held in July, three of Jay’s friends provided crucial testimony shedding light on his final hours and the circumstances leading to his disappearance. Testimonies from Spanish authorities, a pathologist, and the mountain rescue team further detailed the events surrounding Jay’s demise in the Juan Lopez ravine.
The pathologist confirmed Jay’s cause of death as a severe traumatic brain injury, likely resulting in instantaneous death. Toxicology reports also revealed the presence of various substances in his system, including cocaine, MDMA, alcohol, and ketamine. The coroner concluded that Jay’s fatal fall was accidental, emphasizing his lack of experience in mountainous terrain and the adverse effects of his substance consumption.
The inquest dispelled rumors surrounding a ‘stolen’ Rolex, with a key witness denying Jay’s involvement in any theft. Despite the complexities surrounding Jay’s final actions and the events leading to his tragic death, the coroner emphasized that the focus should remain on the circumstances of his passing rather than peripheral issues.
Jay’s mother, Debbie Duncan, shared heartfelt sentiments about her son, describing him as a vibrant young man with a promising future. The family’s plea for remembrance and respect for Jay’s memory underscored the profound impact of his untimely death on those who knew and loved him.
