“Russia Tests Nuclear-Powered Missile Evading Defenses”

-

Russia has successfully tested a new nuclear-powered cruise missile that is capable of evading existing defense systems, bringing it closer to deployment within its military forces, according to President Vladimir Putin. The missile, known as Burevestnik, has been under testing for several years and represents part of Russia’s nuclear strategy amid tensions with the West over Ukraine. In a video released by the Kremlin, Putin, dressed in military attire, received a briefing from Gen. Valery Gerasimov, confirming that the Burevestnik had covered 14,000 kilometers in a recent test flight.

The Burevestnik, also referred to as the “storm petrel” in Russian, flew for 15 hours using nuclear power, showcasing its long-duration capabilities. General Gerasimov noted that the missile’s range was not limited. The exact details of the Burevestnik remain largely undisclosed, with Western experts expressing skepticism about its reliability due to its nuclear propulsion system.

Putin initially disclosed the development of the Burevestnik in his 2018 address, claiming that it would possess an unlimited range and the ability to maneuver undetected by missile defense systems. Despite concerns about the missile’s potential risks and environmental impact, Putin emphasized its strategic significance and asserted its invulnerability to existing and future defense mechanisms.

The Burevestnik faced a setback in August 2019 when an explosion occurred during testing, leading to casualties and a temporary increase in radioactivity levels. While Russian officials did not confirm the incident involved the Burevestnik, the U.S. attributed it to the missile. Putin instructed military officials to prepare for the missile’s deployment, highlighting its unique capabilities and strategic value.

Kirill Dmitriev, a senior aide to Putin, informed U.S. counterparts about the successful testing of the Burevestnik, describing it as a groundbreaking weapon system. The recent drills conducted by Russia’s strategic nuclear forces under Putin’s supervision underscore the nation’s military readiness amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. The exercises involved various components of Russia’s nuclear triad, showcasing its deterrence capabilities through missile launches and strategic bomber operations.

In parallel to these developments, Russia launched drone attacks on Ukraine, resulting in civilian casualties and escalating tensions in the region. The attacks targeted residential areas in Kyiv, causing multiple fatalities and injuries. Ukrainian authorities condemned the assaults and called for international support to counter such threats.

As Russia continues to assert its military prowess and strategic capabilities, the international community closely monitors these developments amid heightened geopolitical uncertainties.
