The upcoming year is expected to bring an increase in the cost of a TV licence, potentially exceeding £180, impacting many households already facing rising living expenses. The government determines the TV licence fee, typically adjusting it annually in April to align with the previous September’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate.
With the confirmed September inflation rate at 3.8%, the current cost of a TV licence stands at £174.50 per year. If the fee rises by 3.8% in April, the new cost for a color licence could surpass £181.
Although the exact increase remains unconfirmed by the government, approximately 300,000 households ceased paying their TV licence fee last year. It is important to note that possessing a TV licence is essential for legally watching live TV or content on catch-up or live platforms like BBC iPlayer. However, streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, ITVX, Disney Plus, YouTube, All 4, or My5 do not necessitate a TV licence unless used to view live broadcasts.
Certain individuals are eligible for free or reduced-price TV licences, including those over 75 claiming Pension Credit. Refunds may be available for unused portions of a TV licence, especially if circumstances change, such as moving to a residence with an existing licence. Residents in care facilities or sheltered housing may qualify for a discounted TV licence at £7.50 per room, flat, or bungalow.
Moreover, individuals who are blind or severely sight-impaired can receive a 50% discount on their TV licence, while students living away from home may be covered under their parents’ licence when watching TV on non-mains-connected devices. Failure to hold a valid TV licence when required may result in fines of up to £1,000, with higher penalties in certain regions.
