“Racing World Mourns Loss of Young Jockey Tommie Jakes”

The racing world is in deep sorrow following the untimely passing of apprentice jockey Tommie Jakes at the age of 19.

In a joint statement, the Injured Jockeys’ Fund and Professional Jockeys Association announced the tragic news of Tommie Jakes’ death at his home near Newmarket. The statement described Jakes as a beloved son and brother, and a valued member of George Boughey’s racing team. The family requested privacy during this difficult time.

Tommie Jakes, who recently had a ride at Nottingham, was scheduled to ride for trainer Ismail Mohammed at Chelmsford. Known as one of the most promising young talents in the jockey community, Jakes had achieved 59 wins since 2023 from 519 appearances. His first victory as an apprentice came aboard Suzi’s Connoisseur at Lingfield under the guidance of trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam.

Coming from a racing family, Jakes followed his father’s footsteps into the sport after initially working with renowned trainer Michael Dickinson. He excelled in pony racing, notably winning by a significant margin at Warwick. His final triumph was achieved aboard Fouroneohfever at Catterick.

The British Horseracing Authority expressed deep sadness over Jakes’ passing, highlighting his talent and dedication. The community mourns the loss and offers support to Jakes’ family, friends, and colleagues. Tributes will be paid at racing events in honor of Tommie Jakes.

George Boughey’s team shared their devastation on social media, praising Jakes for his exceptional skills and positive demeanor. The IJF and PJA provided helpline information for those in need of support during this difficult time.
