The passing of Donna Jean Godchaux, known for her music collaborations with Elvis Presley, Cher, and the Grateful Dead, has been confirmed. She succumbed to a long battle with cancer on November 2 at a hospice in Nashville. Dennis McNally, a representative for the late artist, described her as a kind and radiant soul, with a request for privacy during this time of mourning.

Donna’s musical legacy includes her contributions to Grateful Dead albums such as What a Long Strange Trip It’s Been and Wake of the Flood during her tenure with the band from 1971 to 1979. Apart from her involvement with the Grateful Dead, Donna was part of Keith and Donna Godchaux and Heart of Gold. In 2006, she formed her namesake band, the Donna Jean Godchaux Band.

Her vocal talents were not limited to the Grateful Dead, as she also lent her voice to iconic tracks like Elvis Presley’s Suspicious Minds and Percy Sledge’s When A Man Loves A Woman. Collaborating with renowned artists like Cher, Neil Diamond, Boz Scaggs, and Duane Allman, Donna’s musical journey spanned decades.

Originally from Alabama, Donna ventured to California in the 1960s to pursue her music career, where she met her future husband and bandmate, Keith Godchaux. After Keith’s passing in 1980, Donna married bassist David MacKay and returned to Alabama, where she recorded music at the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio.

Fans have expressed their condolences on social media, remembering Donna’s talent and grace. She is survived by her husband, sons, sister, and brother. Donna Jean Godchaux leaves behind a lasting impact on the music industry and those who cherished her work.
