A newborn baby girl, still connected to her umbilical cord, was discovered abandoned on the stairs of a busy train station during the morning rush hour on Monday. The infant was found at approximately 9:30 a.m. at the entrance of the southbound 1, 2, and 3 subway trains at 34th Street–Penn Station in New York City.
Upon the baby’s discovery, emergency services were contacted promptly, and the baby was taken to Bellevue Hospital. She was conscious and in stable condition when she arrived at the hospital.
Authorities are currently examining surveillance footage in the area to identify the individual who left the child. As of Monday afternoon, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
New York City Transit President Demetrius Crichlow referred to the event as the ‘Miracle on 34th Street,’ remarking on the swift response of emergency services upon finding the unattended infant at the station.
In a separate incident, a newborn baby girl was found abandoned in a cardboard box on the side of a road. The discovery was made by a passerby at 6:50 a.m. on Wednesday, September 24. The baby, believed to be only hours old, was taken to the hospital and confirmed to be in good health.
Located in Tuguegarao City in the Philippines, the baby is now under observation at the hospital for up to five days to ensure her well-being, according to May Asuncion from the City Social Welfare and Development Office.
Chief Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. commended the prompt response of local citizens and authorities, emphasizing the importance of every life and the commitment of law enforcement to identify the individual responsible for abandoning the child.
