With the commencement of the new academic year, numerous students are immersing themselves in a fresh curriculum that is revolutionizing their learning, eating habits, and overall development.

A groundbreaking initiative known as Tesco Fruit & Veg for Schools is providing millions of nutritious food portions to schools with a higher percentage of students receiving free meals. This initiative aims to enhance children’s well-being and academic performance.

One of the beneficiary schools is Ark Putney Academy in southwest London, where actor and comedian Babatunde Aléshé brought a box of fruits and vegetables to educate students on the importance of consuming five portions of fruits and vegetables daily.

The Fruit & Veg for Schools program was introduced in 2024, delivering over 10.8 million healthy food portions to 411 schools in its inaugural year. This academic year, the initiative has expanded to over 500 schools, ensuring each child receives at least one piece of fruit or vegetable daily.

Feedback from last year’s participating schools revealed that 94% of teachers observed improved behavior in students, with enhanced focus, increased energy levels, and better conduct in the classroom. Additionally, all teachers agreed that Tesco Fruit & Veg for Schools positively impacted the lives of the students it reached.

Babatunde emphasizes the filling and energizing qualities of fruits and vegetables, recalling his mother’s influence as a school cook who promoted healthy eating choices. The program offers a variety of items such as bananas, blueberries, avocados, and spinach, which can be incorporated into breakfast clubs or healthy tuck shops.

Babatunde stresses the educational aspect of the initiative, teaching children the nutritional benefits of different fruits and vegetables. He believes that such knowledge empowers children to make healthier food choices.

The emotional impact of the program is evident in schools where students struggling with confidence and emotional well-being were appointed as “fruit monitors,” boosting their self-assurance and sense of purpose.

Tesco UK CEO Ashwin Prasad acknowledges the positive feedback from schools regarding the program’s impact on students. By expanding the initiative, Tesco aims to provide access to more fruits and vegetables to young people in disadvantaged communities across the UK.

By increasing the availability of fruits and vegetables in schools and involving more educational institutions in the program, Tesco’s initiative is not only nourishing children but also sowing the seeds for a healthier future.
