“Alabama Death Row Inmate Appeals to Governor Before Execution”

-

Alabama death row inmate Anthony Boyd, scheduled for execution this week, has appealed to the state’s governor for a meeting before facing the death penalty. Boyd, who has proclaimed his innocence for over thirty years in the case of Gregory Huguley’s murder, is set for execution by nitrogen gas. In a plea delivered at a news conference, Boyd urged Governor Kay Ivey to engage in a conversation with him before proceeding with the execution, emphasizing the need for a fair investigation into his case.

Convicted of the 1993 murder of Gregory Huguley, who was brutally killed over a drug debt, Boyd has persistently maintained his innocence. Despite Boyd’s petition to halt the execution, authorities stand firm on his guilt in the murder. Governor Ivey’s spokesperson, Mike Lewis, highlighted that there have been no recent legal challenges disputing Boyd’s culpability in the crime.

Boyd’s situation has been deemed complex by Governor Ivey’s team, who have rarely intervened in such cases. Alabama’s execution methods have evolved to include nitrogen gas, prompting Boyd’s legal team to seek a pause in the execution process to scrutinize this new approach.

Other individuals involved in the crime, including Shawn Ingram, accused of setting Huguley on fire, have also been convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death in Alabama. Boyd’s plea for a fair review of his case echoes the broader concerns surrounding the implementation of the death penalty in the state.
