Canada Introduces New Colour-Coded Weather Alert System

-

Environment and Climate Change Canada has introduced a revamped weather warning system nationwide. The traditional general watches and warnings are being replaced with a new colour-coded, risk-tiered system aimed at providing a clearer understanding of how the weather forecast will affect individuals and how they should prepare. These adjustments are in accordance with recommendations from the World Meteorological Association and are in line with updates already adopted by 31 weather agencies across Europe.

The updated system incorporates three distinct colours – yellow, orange, and red – to denote different alert levels. Environment and Climate Change Canada will continue to issue various warnings throughout the year, such as severe thunderstorm watches and warnings, rainfall warnings, snowfall warnings, and wind warnings. Special weather statements will still be issued in grey, providing information on potentially significant weather events that do not meet the criteria for a warning.

Each warning will now be assigned a colour-coded alert level of yellow, orange, or red based on an evaluation of the potential impacts of the weather event and the forecast confidence. The alert level will correspond to the severity of the impacts anticipated and the confidence in the forecasted outcomes.

Yellow alerts, the most common level, will cover a wide range of hazardous weather conditions that could impact travel, cause delays or cancellations, or lead to health-related issues like reduced air quality or heat warnings. Orange alerts will signify storms likely to result in widespread damage, including wind storms or ice storms causing significant power outages and travel disruptions. The highest level, red alerts, will indicate dangerous and potentially life-threatening weather conditions, prompting extensive disruptions to travel and power, widespread property damage, and infrastructure issues.

By emphasizing the potential impacts of the weather, the new system aims to enhance preparedness for severe weather events and provide clearer guidance on how to prepare in advance. It is crucial for individuals to carefully read and understand the content of warnings issued for their area and take appropriate actions accordingly.
