The Women’s Professional Baseball League has officially announced the selection of New York, Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco as the inaugural season’s host cities for the four competing teams. Co-founded by Justine Siegal, who made history as the first woman to coach for an MLB team (the Oakland Athletics in 2015), the league revealed its plans last year to debut in 2026 with a six-team format featuring regular season matches, playoffs, and an all-star game.
This forthcoming league will mark the re-emergence of a professional platform for women in baseball since the disbandment of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in 1954, famously depicted in the movie “A League of Their Own.” The WPBL will kick off its first season with four teams, each comprising 15 players.
The top 100 performers from the league’s summer tryouts have advanced to the upcoming draft, where notable players like Mo’ne Davis, Kelsie Whitmore from USA baseball, and Japanese pitcher Ayami Sato will also showcase their talent. All games in the WPBL’s 2026 season will be held at a neutral location, with the specific venue set to be disclosed later. The chosen cities were picked based on their market size and significant baseball fan base.
Justine Siegal expressed excitement about connecting with fans in these renowned sports cities, stating, “Each of these cities are storied sports cities, and we can’t wait to connect with the fans who live there and baseball fans across the country.”
