Thaioronióhte Dan David, a respected Kanien’kehá:ka journalist instrumental in founding the news department of the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN), has passed away at the age of 73 after battling cancer. Described as the “father of APTN News” by Karyn Pugliese, a colleague and friend at APTN, David’s legacy includes mentoring numerous Indigenous journalists and reshaping the narrative of Indigenous stories in media.
In 2000, David co-founded APTN News, previously known as InVision News, with the aim of revolutionizing the portrayal of Indigenous issues in journalism. His motivation stemmed from witnessing the misrepresented coverage of the Kanehsatà:ke community during the Oka Crisis in 1990, a 78-day standoff involving Kanien’kehá:ka protesters, Quebec police, the RCMP, and the military over disputed lands in Kanehsatà:ke.
Despite his firsthand experience and connections during the crisis, David, then reporting for CBC, was sidelined due to perceived bias, which troubled him deeply. Loreen Pindera, a retired CBC journalist and a friend of David, highlighted his dedication to accurate reporting and challenging mainstream media stereotypes of Indigenous peoples.
Following his impactful career at CBC, David was enlisted to assist in launching the South African Broadcasting Corporation post-apartheid, an experience that greatly influenced his approach to establishing APTN’s news division. Pugliese emphasized David’s belief in journalism for the people and credited him with transforming mainstream storytelling of Indigenous communities.
Known for his expertise and humor, David was a supportive mentor who valued inclusivity and humility in the newsroom. His commitment to nurturing young journalists and advocating for diverse voices extended beyond his role at APTN, where he also held positions at Toronto Metropolitan University and the University of Toronto.
Remembered as a compassionate leader and dedicated educator, David’s impact on the journalism industry and Indigenous storytelling will resonate for years to come. His legacy lives on through the countless individuals he inspired and guided throughout his illustrious career.
