A man, Bryan Frederick Jennings, aged 66, was executed on Thursday evening at Florida State Prison near Starke for the 1979 murder of six-year-old Rebecca Kunash. This marked the 16th execution in Florida this year, setting a record. Jennings was put to death via a three-drug injection after being convicted of raping and drowning the young girl.
During the execution, Jennings declined to make a final statement. Following the procedure, Department of Corrections spokesman Jordan Kirkland confirmed that everything went smoothly without any issues.
This year in the United States, a total of 42 individuals have been executed through court orders, the highest number since 2012. The executions have taken place in 11 states across the South and Midwest regions. President Donald Trump has expressed intentions to resume federal executions for death row inmates.
Jennings spent an extensive amount of time on death row, similar to some of the lengthiest periods seen in the country. His journey involved three trials, with the final conviction resulting in a death sentence in 1986. Additionally, Jennings received life sentences for other criminal charges including kidnapping, sexual assault, and burglary.
Despite numerous appeals, including one citing a violation of his right to counsel after his attorney’s death in 2022, Jennings’s execution was carried out. He outlived two prosecutors, the victim’s father, and four state governors since his first trial in 1980.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis defended the increase in executions, emphasizing the importance of delivering justice to victims’ families who have endured lengthy waits for closure. The governor highlighted the significance of timely justice and reiterated his commitment to ensuring a smooth process.
Two more executions are scheduled in Florida before the end of the year. Richard Barry Randolph and Mark Allen Geralds are set to face lethal injections, potentially bringing the total number of executions in 2025 to 18. A veterans’ advocacy group has advocated for leniency for former service members on death row, noting that a significant percentage of executed or scheduled inmates this year have military backgrounds.
