Paul Thomas Anderson’s intense action thriller “One Battle After Another” dominates the nominations for the British Academy Film Awards, with a total of 14 nods announced on Tuesday. The film also received acting nominations for five of its cast members.
Following closely behind is Ryan Coogler’s vampire epic “Sinners,” which garnered 13 nominations, while Chloé Zhao’s family tragedy “Hamnet” and Josh Safdie’s “Marty Supreme” each received 11 nominations.
Guillermo Del Toro’s reimagining of “Frankenstein” and the Norwegian drama “Sentimental Value” both secured eight nominations, making them part of the top contenders for both the British and Hollywood Academy Awards.
The nominees for Best Film include “One Battle After Another,” “Hamnet,” “Marty Supreme,” “Sinners,” and “Sentimental Value.”
Jane Millichip, the CEO of BAFTA, highlighted that the nominations celebrate films like “One Battle After Another” and “Sinners,” which tackle significant societal issues such as activism and Black identity, as well as portray intimate family relationships in a compelling manner.
The Best Leading Actor category features Robert Aramayo for his role in the biographical drama “I Swear,” Timothée Chalamet for “Marty Supreme,” Leonardo DiCaprio for “One Battle After Another,” Ethan Hawke for the Broadway biopic “Blue Moon,” Michael B. Jordan for “Sinners,” and Jesse Plemons for the dystopian tragicomedy “Bugonia.”
Among the leading actresses, Jessie Buckley earned a nomination for her role as Agnes Hathaway in “Hamnet.” Other contenders include Rose Byrne for “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You,” Kate Hudson for “Song Sung Blue,” Chase Infiniti for “One Battle After Another,” Renate Reinsve for “Sentimental Value,” and Emma Stone for “Bugonia.”
Supporting actors from “One Battle After Another,” Teyana Taylor, Benicio del Toro, and Sean Penn, also received nominations.
The Associated Press received a nomination in the Best Documentary category for Mstyslav Chernov’s impactful documentary “2000 Meters to Andriivka,” which sheds light on the war in Ukraine.
The winners will be revealed at a ceremony on Feb. 22 in London, hosted by actor Alan Cumming. The EE BAFTA Film Awards often serve as a preview for the Hollywood Academy Awards, scheduled for March 15 this year.
Notably, the BAFTA nominations include performers overlooked by the Oscars, such as Paul Mescal for “Hamnet” and Odessa A’zion for “Marty Supreme.”
The BAFTAs also feature a category for Best British Film, with nominees like “The Ballad of Wallis Island,” “Pillion,” “I Swear,” and “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.”
The BAFTA winners are chosen by 8,500 industry professionals, with the Rising Star Award determined by public vote. This year’s rising star nominees are Infiniti, Aramayo, Miles Caton from “Sinners,” and British actors Archie Madekwe and Posy Sterling.
Diversity has been a focus for the British film academy, with recent changes aiming to increase inclusivity. Women were notably absent from the Best Director category in 2020, prompting adjustments to the voting process to enhance diversity. Chloé Zhao is the sole female nominee in this year’s Best Director category, reflecting a positive shift toward greater gender diversity in directing across all categories.
