A streetwear company based in Montreal is receiving recognition for producing the original white fleece jacket that was altered to create a popular jacket featured in the television series “Heated Rivalry.” The CEO and founder of Kuwalla Tee, Yaniv Abecassis, revealed that their jacket gained widespread attention across Canada after appearing in the show’s second episode, although the company did not receive any acknowledgment.
The modified jacket, designed by Canadian costume designer Hanna Puley, features red lettering spelling out “Canada,” red accents on the collar and zipper pulls, and maple leaves on the arms. The character Shane Hollander, portrayed by Hudson Williams, was seen sporting the modified zip-up during scenes set at the Sochi Olympics. Despite not being official Team Canada merchandise, fans expressed a strong desire to purchase the jacket following its on-screen appearance.
To fulfill the demand, the show’s creators teamed up with a Canadian clothing company, Province of Canada, to make the fleece more widely available. However, Kuwalla Tee raised concerns about their fleece being used to promote the new product without receiving due credit. The company proactively sought recognition from the show’s producers and Province of Canada, emphasizing the importance of proper attribution.
After private discussions with the show’s producers, Kuwalla Tee was dissatisfied with the outcome, prompting the involvement of CBC News. The production company clarified that the modified fleece showcased was not the final design and assured that the public version would be produced in Canada by Province of Canada. Despite the resolution of the issue through negotiations, legal expert Richard Gold from McGill University explained that Kuwalla Tee may not have a strong legal case as generic fashion items like fleece jackets typically have limited legal protection unless featuring distinct logos or designs.
In conclusion, while Kuwalla Tee has now been acknowledged on social media for their contribution to the viral jacket, the value of the garment primarily stems from its association with the show “Heated Rivalry.” Gold remarked that the show and its creators are the main sources of the jacket’s value, highlighting the complexities of intellectual property rights in the fashion industry.
