A recent examination by Marketplace on TikTok revealed that a significant portion of cancer and autism-related videos contain misinformation. Despite TikTok being a popular platform for health advice, a study by Marketplace found that a vast majority of videos on cancer treatments and autism therapies lack scientific backing. Out of 200 videos analyzed, over 80% of the remedies showcased, amassing more than 75 million views, were not supported by scientific evidence.
The engaging nature of personal stories plays a crucial role in the dissemination of unproven therapies on social media platforms like TikTok, notes Tim Caulfield, a researcher on health misinformation. These narratives often resonate with viewers, contributing to the traction these videos receive.
In the investigation, Marketplace searched TikTok using specific terms related to cancer and autism treatments, selecting 100 videos for each category based on popularity. The creators of these videos ranged from individuals claiming personal successes with treatments to accounts potentially profiting from these unverified remedies.
Moving on, Ticketmaster, a prominent online ticketing platform, has pledged to take action against large-scale scalpers who exploit the system by using numerous fake accounts to purchase and resell tickets at inflated prices for various events. This commitment follows a lawsuit filed by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission accusing Ticketmaster and its parent company, LiveNation, of engaging in deceptive ticket resale practices.
