China’s widely watched CCTV Spring Festival gala recently highlighted the nation’s advanced industrial strategy and Beijing’s ambition to lead in humanoid robots and the future of manufacturing. During the event, four emerging humanoid robot startups – Unitree Robotics, Galbot, Noetix, and MagicLab – showcased their innovative products. The gala, a significant televised event in China akin to the Super Bowl in the United States, featured humanoid robots prominently in its initial sketches. One remarkable demonstration involved over a dozen Unitree humanoids engaging in intricate martial arts routines alongside human child performers.

The program also introduced Bytedance’s AI chatbot Doubao and included comedic skits and synchronized dances involving Noetix and MagicLab humanoid robots. The enthusiasm surrounding China’s humanoid robot sector is escalating as key players like AgiBot and Unitree gear up for upcoming initial public offerings. Additionally, domestic artificial intelligence startups are set to unveil cutting-edge models during the lucrative Lunar New Year holiday.

China’s President Xi Jinping’s engagement with robotics startups has brought unprecedented visibility to the sector, with Xi meeting five robotics startup founders in the past year. This attention underscores China’s commitment to advancing in the robotics industry. The CCTV Spring Festival gala, which captured a substantial 79% of live TV viewership in China last year, has long served as a platform to showcase Beijing’s technological aspirations, including space programs, drones, and robotics.

Beyond the entertainment value of humanoid robots performing various tasks, China views robotics and AI as integral to its future AI+ manufacturing strategy. The country believes that automation-driven productivity enhancements will help counteract challenges posed by its aging workforce. China’s dominance in humanoid robot shipments was evident last year, accounting for 90% of the approximately 13,000 humanoid robots shipped globally. Research firm Omdia reported that China outpaced U.S. competitors, including Tesla’s Optimus, in this sector. Morgan Stanley predicts a significant increase in China’s humanoid robot sales this year, underscoring the country’s rapid progress in robotics and AI.

Renowned entrepreneur Elon Musk acknowledged China’s prowess in this domain, emphasizing the nation’s competitiveness and innovative spirit. Musk pointed out that Chinese companies are formidable rivals, particularly as Tesla shifts its focus towards embodied AI and its flagship humanoid robot, Optimus.
