“Quebec Doctors Warn of Deceptive Deepfake Health Videos”

-

Quebec medical professionals are raising concerns about the emergence of deceptive deepfake videos online, warning that these fabricated videos could undermine public confidence in the healthcare system and jeopardize people’s well-being.

These AI-manipulated videos utilize the appearances of actual doctors to provide dubious medical advice and falsely endorse or market specific products. Dr. François Marquis, head of intensive care at Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital in Montreal, expressed dismay upon discovering his likeness being exploited in a deepfake video.

Citing the detrimental impact on physician credibility, Marquis emphasized the risk posed to patients who place trust in medical professionals. Dr. Alain Vadeboncoeur, an emergency physician at the Montreal Heart Institute, also revealed instances where his image was illicitly utilized to promote unrelated products, including discussions on topics outside his expertise.

The doctors stressed the potential health hazards associated with individuals following advice from these false videos. They highlighted the dangers of unknowingly ingesting unverified substances, potentially leading to adverse reactions or interactions with prescribed medications, such as life-saving drugs like insulin or blood thinners.

Historically, deepfake technology targeted celebrities and public figures, but the use of respected community members complicates the delineation between reality and deception. The ease of creating personalized deepfakes has escalated online scams, making it challenging for ordinary individuals to discern authenticity.

Addressing the legal restrictions in Quebec, physicians are prohibited from endorsing specific products over others, emphasizing the need for cautiousness when encountering product endorsements on social media. Experts recommend skepticism towards online advertisements, particularly those masquerading as personal recommendations from trusted sources.

Efforts to combat fraudulent activities and protect the public from deepfakes include initiatives like the Canadian Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute and the forthcoming voluntary code of conduct for AI developers. These measures aim to enhance transparency in AI-generated content to safeguard individuals against deceptive advertising.

The public is encouraged to report incidents of cybercrime, fraud, or scams to local law enforcement or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre if they suspect they have been victimized.
